Practical Tips for Escaping the Not-Self

You've read about the Not-Self, the conditioning that our minds have absorbed from the world. You might have even started to spot the "killer monkey mind" in your own life, noticing the thoughts and anxieties that aren't truly your own. So, what's the next step?

 

The secret to navigating this conditioning isn't about fighting it, but about returning to the one thing you can always trust: your Inner Authority.

 

The Two Most Important Tools

Ra Uru Hu, the founder of the Human Design System, taught that the entire purpose of this knowledge is to empower you to live as yourself. He said that the key is to make decisions not from your mind, but from your body, by following your Strategy and Authority.

 

Think of your Strategy and Authority as your internal compass. It's the simple, mechanical truth of how your unique body is designed to move through the world.

 

  • For Generators and Manifesting Generators, your Strategy is to respond. You are designed to wait for something to show up in your environment and then feel an inner pull—a gut response—to it. Your Authority is your Sacral Center, which will make a sound or give you a feeling of "yes" or "no" in the moment.

  • For Projectors, your Strategy is to wait for the invitation. You're designed to be recognized and invited to share your wisdom. Your Authority will tell you if the invitation is correct for you.

  • For Manifestors, your Strategy is to inform others before you act. By letting those who will be impacted by your actions know what you're doing, you clear the path for your creative power.

  • For Reflectors, your Strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle (28.5 days) before making major decisions. This allows you to experience the full cycle of the moon's transits and feel what's correct for you.

 

Start with the Small Things

It might feel overwhelming at first, but the best way to get started is to practice with small, low-stakes decisions.

 

Instead of asking your mind, "Should I go to the grocery store now or later?" try asking your body. Wait for an inner response or a feeling. If you're a Generator, does your Sacral say "yes" to going now? If you're a Projector, did someone invite you to get groceries with them?

 

This practice, even on a small scale, will help you begin to see that your mind's race track is just noise. It’s not your true guide. Over time, as you follow your Strategy and Authority, you will naturally begin to shed the layers of conditioning and align with your true self.

 

You are the authority of your own life. Start listening to yourself and see what magic unfolds.
